US trade deficit unexpectedly narrows; home price index meets forecast

(Alliance News) - The US international trade deficit decreased, defying expectations of an increase in June, the US Bureau of Economic Analysis reported on Tuesday.
The trade deficit for June totalled USD85.9 billion, according to the Bureau, down from USD97.5 billion in May. FXStreet-cited consensus was for the deficit to increase to USD98.4 billion.
The US Census Bureau meanwhile reported that advance wholesale inventories rose 0.2% on-month to USD907.7 billion in June, surpassing the consensus forecast of a 0.1% decline and compared with May's 0.3% decrease.
Advance retail inventories rose 0.3% to USD808.7 billion in June.
Also on Tuesday, the Federal Housing Finance Agency reported that the housing price index declined 0.2% on-month in May, in line with consensus and slowing from a 0.3% decrease, revised from 0.4%, in April.
House prices in May increased 2.8% on an annual basis.
